The journey
At the end of 2023, Jamescape became a Disability Confident Leader organisation through Project EDI. We took the time to review and improve our employment practices because we knew it was the morally right thing to do, but also we believed in growing our business in the most inclusive and sustainable way.
Through the scheme, we saw first-hand how, with some simple changes to how we recruited and managed our staff, we became an inclusive organisation that could more easily tap into the 20% of UK working age people who identify as disabled.
Conversely, we also saw the flaws with the Disability Confident scheme. It’s made by the UK Government - it’s clunky, difficult to navigate, and lacks practical guidance. Seeing both the good and the bad in the scheme, we wanted to become more than just advocates. We set out on a mission to make inclusion work for organisations of all sizes, sectors, and industries.
The process
Our Disability Confident offer is as simple and straight-forward as possible. We appreciate that HR staff have endless piles of work, so that’s why we handle the paperwork. Our approach starts with an initial diagnostic meeting to figure out what inclusivity work your organisation has already implemented, and then we map this against the scheme and build your action plan from there. We provide active support to help you along this process, providing resources like EDI policies and job listing equality statement text. Further, we provide ready-to-go social media graphics and press releases to help organisations shout about their Disability Confident achievements.
While we do push organisations to go beyond the scheme’s baseline requirements, we ultimately help them to achieve Disability Confident in a way that suits them. Our model of ‘easy wins’ means that we’re not looking to scrap and restart all your employment practices, we simply want to make the small tweaks to make them inclusive.
Often, we find that organisations are surprised to learn that they already have a lot of inclusive practices, but they might never have considered it through the disability perspective.
For the top tier of the scheme, Disability Confident Leader, we have a lived experience disability panel who are specifically trained to evaluate inclusive practices in focus groups, which helps ensure organisations are confident that they are doing the best for their staff.
The ask
We’re looking for organisations of all sizes, sectors, and industries to get involved with Disability Confident and let us empower them to become truly inclusive workplaces. Diverse teams are proven to be more innovative and creative, so at a time when recruitment is becoming more and more difficult, it’s time to re-think our workplaces so that we can break down barriers for the huge, untapped disabled talent pool.
Jamescape is already working with our first five clients to become Disability Confident Leaders - is your organisation ready to do the right thing, get ahead, and become inclusive for your staff and future colleagues?
